ABA Therapy

Not Your Typical ABA

At The Tomorrow Center, we don’t just “ABA,” we PBS! Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is the foundation of our approach. If you haven’t been exposed to PBS, you may notice that it looks a lot different than the old-style table-top ABA. PBS is much more respectful and considerate of the child’s needs, preferences, and learning style. We build upon our PBS-based approach with a schedule that maximizes opportunity for social interaction and peer-motivated learning – because learning through play doesn’t feel like learning at all!

PBS dramatically increases skill acquisition and functional behaviors to improve a child’s quality of life. It is the basis for every child’s treatment plan. In short, PBS is a set of research-based ABA strategies that make changes to your child’s environment to help your child learn new skills and . These strategies are considered effective because interventions result in increasing the child’s success, confidence, and personal satisfaction to enhance positive social interactions across work, academic, recreational, and community settings. In short, this is not your typical ABA – it’s way better!

Some of the PBS strategies we to create positive results include:

  • Natural Environment Teaching (NET), which focuses on teaching skills in the natural context, where the skill would typically be used. Unlike more structured teaching methods that may occur in a clinical setting or at a table, NET takes advantage of the learner’s natural environment, leveraging naturally occurring activities and interactions to promote learning. So, while it looks more like play therapy, it is
  • Functional Communication Training (FCT), which helps teach children meaningful ways to communicate. It can also help reduce frustration and anxiety associated with communication. Disruptive behaviors are replaced with functional, replacement behaviors that help the child thrive at home and in the community.
  • Assent in ABA is a strategy that helps the child build decision making skills related to participating in activities, and then communicating those decisions effectively. This strategy helps reduce frustrations created by more rigid environments, like a classroom setting, and helps build the child’s confidence.

PBS not only improves behavior, but it also improves your child’s confidence and quality of life, as well as his/her interactions with family and others. We use these strategies with all children we serve to help them gain new skills, increase confidence, and learn functional replacement behaviors – because independent, appropriate decision making will help them reach their highest potential.
